On the radio...

I love songs that had enough of an impact when they were popular that now, hearing them again, can take you right back to a specific moment and you can recall what you were doing.

On the way home today: "Boys of Summer" by Don Henley. I was living in Spillville and moved there briefly to be closer to my best friend who moved in with her boyfriend, who lived with his parents (and I thought this was a good thing to follow....*eye roll*). I hooked up with a gal that was a brief friend to the both of us and lived with her. I remember this song coming on MTV one day when I was sitting on the couch thinking, "Why am I here in this stupid little town, in this stupid little house, doing nothing with my stupid little life, hanging out with these STUPID little people." It wasn't long after that I woke up from that brief walk down that stupid little path and got on my way to my own life. I like that song!

"Brandy" by Looking Glass. I was in grade school - I have no idea what age - but I remember riding my green bike with a red sparkly banana seat in the driveway. The radio was blaring in the garage and I remember thinking, as I listened to the lyrics, "How do you lay whiskey down? Won't it run all over?" Ah - to be young at literal again!

Lastly, "Band on the Run". Endless afternoons working at Wonder Cave with nothing to do but sit and listen to the radio. "Cupid" (draw back your bow-oooo- OH! and let yer arrow go) also reminds me of the summer stint at Wonder Cave. That was a cool job, looking back! Lots of fun jokes (tossing the other tour guide's flash light batteries in the cornfield) and giving lots of tours - a few scary ones, too. But all in all - that radio was our lifeline and it is a good growing up memory.

So then - I am home - and the endless barking brings me back to January 2009!

I think I may know one of those stupid people...and you would have no argument from me on IQ level...

"Man Hunt" will always remind me of the summer after Senior Year. My three gal friends and I would drive around singing, "Can Hunt, we all need the dough, so we can buy coke and amaretto." We literally drove around, picked up cans, threw them in the trunk of the Dart and redeemed them for a nickel apiece. We would save the cash until we has enough to drive to Prairie to buy booze. Stupid, some might say, but so much fun!

I saw the title of the post and immediately started singing that Donna Summer song.

I know exactly what you mean. There are songs and smells that can transport me completely. I love that about memory.

I have an almost embarrassingly deep collection of 70's/80's music because I just can't resist grabbing those songs when I see them. Come on, that was our childhood - who wouldn't want the original soundtrack?

I remember being absolutely mystified by music back then - who were these people with such magical powers to make me feel this way? I think I remember the music better than a lot of actual experiences from back then.

I'm also kind of a dork, but... (Sent you a song, btw.)
