Around the house

1. We had a guest for supper last night, who also spent the night. He works with my husband and has become one of his/our friends. I stepped into the spare room this morning after they left and as I pondered the messy bed, and then the towels all over the bathroom floor, I wondered what makes some people feel the need to tidy up their stay as if they had never been there. And then, some people can leave an hour clean-up behind and not even think twice. It didn't bother me, mind you - happy to have him over - but I guess it goes back to the human nature thing and what makes people tick.

2. I also noticed a good amount of coffee spilled down the front of the kitchen counters this morning. If there is a way for my husband to get beverage or food product in places they should not be he can do it. Jelly is his biggest nemesis. A peanut butter and jelly sandwich almost always means a few surprises in the days to come. The laundry room door handle, a glob on the floor, and occasionally the remote control.

3. Mark is getting ready to head out on a bike ride for a week. The "Falling Leaf Rally" in St. Louis. and then on to Memphis. I dare say it might end up being known as the "Falling Temperature Rally". We spent a couple hundred dollars on items that will hopefully keep him warm. Sleeping on the ground in a tent does not even sound remotely amusing to me right now.

4. We finally bought an Ipod. Well, I should say it is more for Mark than anyone. I don't think I know anyone who appreciates music as much as he does. And all kinds. He gave me a list of songs he has had in his truck for over a year. He adds to it when he hears something he likes. So I spent an afternoon finding these "off the beaten track" genres and am happy to say I got all but 5 or 6 loaded up for him. It's is fun to see him truly enjoy that the way that he does. Hopefully it will also assist in drowning out the snoring from his biking buddies in the coming week when they have to stay in a hotel.

5. I managed to lose about 9 pounds so far. I am happy with that, but the reality that I cannot "lose it like I used to" is upon me. I am just going to bear that in mind as I continue to inhale whole grains and everything else that does not carry a shelf life of more than one or two weeks. Strangely - dieting is very easy if you just quit thinking about it and get over "how you feel".

6. This time of year it is hard to know when you should turn on the furnace. Thankfully, I have only had to blurp it on to take the chill off and then I shut if off. This holds for a few days with the windows closed since it is really not "winter" cold out. Yesterday, I thought I better bump it up since we were having an overnight guest. I finally remembered to do it about mid-evening after the oven was turned off. I didn't remember the latter part of that little exercise, however, (shutting it off) and this morning I woke up and it felt like the surface of the sun in here. I am sure our house guest must have wondered about this - even for just a moment. Hmmmm...that might explain the messy bed. The covers probably got kicked off in hopes of finding some kind of comfort for sleeping. (I am laughing now.....I would bet that is what happened!)

7. The house is very different without a dog. We had to put our old Pug to sleep a couple weeks ago. I still get up in the morning and have that background thought about him (letting him out, feeding him, etc.). I miss being greeted when I come home, too. This is the first time in 18 years I have not had a house dog. I have let the 2 village idiots in from time to time. As funny as they are - having a german shepherd and a border collie thumping around in here is just sensory overload for me and for them! Bulls in a china shop and hair as far as the eye can see! They will inevitably start to wrestle and that's when stuff starts to get knocked over and then I end up having to drag them back outside. I want another little compandre' but I think it's too soon even for me.

Well I just caught a glimpse of the time and I better get going. Speaking of time - the time stamp on my posts has been all goofed up here for some reason. The time and date are correct on my computer so I don't have a clue how this could be happening. Oh well - I guess I really don't care that much! LOL

NINE pounds?! you rock!! I've been a bit shy of the scale so I'd better get back off the white foods- I made stuffing for dinner last night (and homemade gravy for the chicken that went with it...)

So sorry to hear about your dog. It's hard to get used to the empty space they used to fill. I did laugh about the german shepherd though, I have one (lab in there too) and the hair is such an issue! Wish he could live outside but he's a HUGE mama's boy who has issues from his lost/shelter days and cries when he can't see me.

Glad you're back!!
And congratulations on that nine pounds!!

I can totally identify with the "mama's boy" syndrome your dog has for you! My little name for Jack is my "big baby boy"! I have called him this for years. This big strapping dog (he is big even by GS standards) is just a melted cupcake at heart and he absolutely adores me. I love that.

The nine pounds is a good thing - and thanks! But considering the last 4 I lost and gained a few times - right now its on the "lost" side of the scorecard. ;-) For now anyway!
