The highlight of my day was the low light

Today I had to call the neighor to come over and shoot a racoon that took residence under a pine tree near the dog kennel. :(

I tried to help this little guy a few days ago. The dogs found him curled up by the central air unit. We have the occasional raccoon here - usually it appears to be somebody who got tagged by daylight before he could find a place to hide until dark again! So, I put the dogs back in the kennel and was not super confident about walking up and just jabbing it to see what it would do. So I went back in the house and got a broom, climbed on the kitchen counter and opened the window - dangled the broom down to where he was and gave him a gentle poke. He looked up at me as if to say, "Awright - I'm going, I'm going...". He lumbered off to the nearest tree and climbed up and found a spot to curl up again. I had a bad feeling about this guy then. He was moving way too slow - but I thought he deserved a chance...

Jack got to him today before I knew what he was running to. He grabbed the little guy by the back of the neck and tossed him. I immedietily commanded Jack and Lucy back to the kennel - and locked them up in hopes he would run off like all the others. That was not to be - he could not even roll back over on his stomach. He layed there and was clearly suffering badly.

So, with Mark's advice (he was working today) I called the neighbor - who shoots things with ease :-/ That part bothered me. But what else to do?

Okay - enough with the posts about DEATH for awhile - I promise!

The moon is freakishly bright tonight!! It has created this awesome reflection on the iced over snow and it looks like water out there. Very cool! If it was warm - I would be under that sky right now! But if it was warm I would have no reflection, stupid...what am I thinking.... ;-)

Good night....

About the animal thing - I hate that when that happens. Even when it's the best for all concerned. I once spent a day picking up and moving out to a field, small snakes (about the size of a pencil) that had taken up residence in my flower bed beside the house. Why should they be put to death I thought... until I ran down to the basement to change loads of laundry and one slithered out from underneath the washer. Sorry, but I beat that one to death as fast as I could since he was making a break for the freezer. And yes, the moon is spectacular tonight! We can see deer way out in the fields.

That's a sad story, but you did the right thing. I hate suffering of any kind. Poor raccoon.
Yes, that moon was incredible last night. Makes me think of that song from that animated movie about that mouse.
