New Year Challenges and Monopoly

On New Years Eve, we opted for some board games in lieu of going out on the town and ringing in the New Year! This was the catalyst, then, for what has become a weekend long Monopoly tournament! It has been on the kitchen table now since 8:00 a.m. yesterday and we play off and on as we feel like it. The honor system is in place, I might add, so that when we quit - there is no cheating! The game will end at 6:00 p.m. Sunday night and - as the rule states - the richest in money and property will be crowned the victor! It got ugly last night. Early in the game I was winning - and painfully so. I took pity upon my neighbor and sold him Boardwalk so he had some cash flow. Little did I know, that would later set him up as the biggest slum lord in Monopoly history and now I barely have 2 cents to rub together. I plan on digging my heels in deep for the next round, however.

While playing Monopoly and discussing what we should have for the various meals over the weekend, we made a little challenge for ourselves. I'm sure you can all relate to the somewhat full "pantry" of items you have had for months to years that you never seem to try to do anything with. Add to that, a freezer in the basement with miscellaneous cuts of meat - and alot of it - and then a few cupboards with the same random canned food and pasta's. Yet, we always seem to go to the grocery store for the same circular selection of meals. It gets expensive - and yet all this "other" food is here.

We have challenged ourselves to not buy any groceries (aside from fresh fruit, veg and milk, butter and bread (after the frozen bread dough runs out) until we get through the majority of this stuff. All good food items - just requiring some thawing, thought and creativity to put something together.

Last night I made homemade pizza and I must say it was one of the best I ever made. I will keep you posted on Slum Lord Monopoly and the culinary delights I manage to come up with!

You have learned a valuable lesson- compassion and capitalism do not mix, at least when you're playing with your spouse.
I've been trying to intentionally use up aging canned goods. Ended up with a really tasty chicken chili made with salsa verde. Yum.

Have you heard from Suzette?? I'm worried.

I called Suzie y/day but haven't heard back from her.

Happy New Year, BK!

I have played that "empty the pantry" game but usually when the month outlasted the money. I always like to rise to that challenge. Makes me feel thrifty.

I have already started that challenge and am so glad to see I have company! I promise myself once I've gone through these goods I will never be tempted to purchase boxes of falafel or generic pudding. Oh and that weird foil envelope of mystery asian cuisine that just requires a block of tofu to be added. Nope, I won't ever be tempted again.

GLad I am not alone! I may need some tips for the canned carrots (from Marks mothers pantry) and the powdered hot wing sauce in a packet! And I have no chicken!
