I am not one to get freaked out these days - and tonight is no exception. However, (notice I didn't say BUT), tonight I just have some things going bump in the night I don't know about.
Earlier today, I passed through the living room and I swear I smelled cigarette smoke. So much so, I stopped what I was doing to try and figure it out. It seemed to just go away once I noticed it. We don't smoke and no one has ever smoked in this house.
This evening, there are bumps, cracks and a thump from upstairs that has me looking over my shoulder just a little. At one point, I heard a commotion in the laundry room and thought Buddy must be up to something. Upon further inspection, he is sound asleep in his new little bed. I guess a logical mind would connect these noises to the fact it is painfully cold outside and an old house is just going to make noise? Sounds feasible.
Right?

Yes. An old house in this kind of cold can creak. And light up a Marlboro.
I smelled burning marshmallow the other day in the office. Weird.
Noises? yes. Smoke? probably not. Maybe Mark has acquired a new habit he's not told you about yet.
I LOVE the pinecone picture. It gives me hope that spring will be here again one day, inspite of the -26 degrees on my thermometer.
Well the house creeked and cracked all night. "It" is cold too - that much I am certain of! The smoke smell? I am nearly convinced I am imagined it - and if I didn't - it was probably just something wafting around I am not thinking of! Amazing how logical things seem when its daylight!
