The Snorkel

As I was tromping around in frigidness this morning at 5:00 a.m. - I wasn't cold at all. I was properly dressed for this kind of air. Out of no where I got an image of the Snorkel Parka!

Growing up, there were 3 or 4 kids in the neighborhood that had them - I never did - but it was the ultimate in sliding gear! Kids that had the snorkel could outlast the kid with the hat and scarf by a long shot!

Sometimes I got jealous of that kid tromping around with the Snorkel Parka! But then again - they never saw anything coming! Peripheral vision was completely obliterated! If you were clever enough you could just walk up and steal a sled or toboggan and they would just stand there! Patiently waiting their turn to go down the hill. Then, the realization that the sled is gone! A couple kids would cry - and you couldn't see them crying thanks to the snorkel - you only heard it.

There were 2 kids I used to sled with that had snorkels (they were brother and sister). They fought constantly and when one of them was trying to get the upper hand, they would start smacking at each other and eventually one would grab the others snorkel! Then it was all over! The person with the handful of snorkel could pull the other to the ground without even trying! I remember laughing so hard I had to sit down in the snow!

Having a hat and scarf wasn't so bad! We had the advantage of a full range of vision! I wish I had one today though - so here's to the Snorkel!
