Not much to report today. I don't work Monday's, so I spent some time picking up around the house, ran an errand and got home just in time for a very important delivery I was not expecting today!
A Bible. I have a Bible that I got when I was a kid and have tried very hard - and on many occasions - to read it like a favorite novel. It doesn't happen that way though, I stumble - I don't understand certain things and let's be honest - it is not the easiest read. Before I know it, my mind drifts along as I am "reading" and I have not a clue what I just read. Back in the drawer it always goes. I have danced this dance for years...
I know "the basics", like most people do and the stories from the Bible we grew up with. But, I seem to be at a point where I want to understand it beyond my general knowledge of it. So, in "my travels" I found a book, that is "the Bible", but written for a dope like me ;-) So, it arrived today! It is an "amplified Bible" I guess to use the appropriate term. It is not a re-write of the Bible, it just has additives to help you understand what you are reading.
With this particular book, each page offers sidebar explanations to some of the more complicated verses. About every other page will elaborate on a certain aspect of what is being talked about and then explains how certain verses can be applied to your own way of life. Absolutely the best $35.00 I have ever spent. I am 25 pages into it and had a hard time putting it down. A very good sign. :-)
I did one other thing today. Taking inspiration from michaelg, I ventured up into the attic and found my mothers wedding dress. I kind of dreaded doing it because I was uncertain of what condition I would find it in. Turns out, it was as I left it 13 years ago. Yellow, but very much salvagleable. I will need to get the name of that restorer, mg. I am actually surprised at what good condition it is in. That thing has traveled all over with me in my roaming twenties. It is truly amazing it never got left behing at one of my many apartments.
I also found our wedding china up there. A good deal of it was given to us as wedding gifts, but I don't have a complete set and I don't really know if I want one at this point! But, my goal is to figure out what I have and then slowly add pieces - or I guess I could just buy a set of white Corelle and fill in the blanks. I cannot recall one meal in the past 15 years where I have thought, "OH! Let us run get the good China shall we?" Quite the contrary actually in this family! A decision for another day, maybe! But all in all not bad for a Monday, Monday!

Cool gift to yourself! A word of advice...the Bible is probably not one of those books best read front to back. I'd start in the New Testament (the second part) maybe around 1 John or so. I'm studying 1 Peter which is probably my favorite book.
The Old Testament can be a bit maybe...boring... in parts and has to be worked up to.
Enjoy!!
What? The Old Testament is like Dynasty with multiple marriages and plagues. I like the Psalms myself.
If I give you the name of the restorer, will you come up to the cities. I have to say that although I have no idea what to do with the dress, I'm thrilled to have it.
Brenda, you need to get out on Facebook. There are pictures of you being posted out there.
Good try MG! If there are pictures of me on Facebook - I will unleash my 80's photo album to the WORLD! Suzie - you should be very worried!
I will meander that way today if I have time. Well, maybe. LOL
janban - Thanks for the advice! I am half way through Genesis and it has kept me pretty enthralled! At one point I jotted a quick family tree of all the people they unleashed and ran out of paper when I got to the offspring of Ham and Japeth. I will try skipping around a little - that does make more sense since it is a collection of books rather than one story start to finish. I agree with Mike! Lots of drama in Genesis - fabulously thought provoking!!!
I'm not posting pictures of you. I know better. People are posting old class photos and such. It's a riot.
Brenda:
Watch for Understanding the Bible classes by Richard Simon Hanson in Decorah. Very informative and real and sometimes quite funny. The Unitarian Universalists sponsor the classes.
About the china-start using for your everyday dishes. What the hell, life is not a dress rehearsl and you deserve to treat yourself like company everyday. I use my wedding dishes daily and the kids love it! I also encourage using real silver if you have it.
There is no trailer hitch on a coffin-so you can't take it with you.
That's my two-cents worth.
I recall having Richard Simon Hanson teach a few of our confirmation classes and a rather hysterical moment when he doing a slide show and had a pic of what an artist perceived the devil to look like. RSH made a reference to the "thorn covered penis" that was in the picture. Cmon, we were a bunch of junior high kids - of course we thought it was a riot. I need to check my brand new face book page. My kids told me I didn't have any friends...nice. Just name your price for that photo album.
